The “wisdom” in wisdom teeth

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last set of molars located at the back of the mouth. Most people have four wisdom teeth, with one in each corner of the mouth. These teeth typically emerge in late adolescence or early adulthood, between the ages of 17 and 25.

Because they develop later in life, the term “wisdom teeth” nods to a person having more wisdom once these teeth emerge. However, wisdom teeth are prone to causing a slew of dental issues—like impaction, trouble cleaning or insufficient jaw space—all which can be avoided by extracting wisdom teeth proactively.

What are wisdom teeth extractions?

Wisdom teeth extractions are a common dental treatment. Extractions are possible when the wisdom tooth has fully emerged through the gum and can be easily removed with forceps. But for impacted wisdom teeth that are only partially emerged, oral surgery is needed.

This type of extraction is often suggested by dentists to prevent future dental issues. Your Aspen Dental care team will use modern techniques and anesthesia to make the process quick and minimize any discomfort.

Why you may need a wisdom tooth extraction

There are several reasons you might need this procedure:

Impacted wisdom teeth

This means the wisdom teeth can’t break through the gums due to lack of room.

Gum disease or infection

Wisdom teeth can be difficult to clean, so they can attract bacteria. If left untreated this could lead to gum disease or tooth decay.

Cysts or tumors

Rarely, a dormant wisdom tooth can lead to the formation of a cyst that can harm the bones or tooth roots.

Preparing for wisdom teeth extractions

During your initial consultation, your dentist will go through your medical history and discuss anesthesia options.

How much does wisdom teeth removal cost?

Great question. To best prepare your smile (and your budget) for wisdom teeth extraction, it’s a good idea to plan ahead of time. The cost of wisdom tooth removal depends on a few things like how many teeth you need removed, if an oral surgeon or general dentist performs the procedure, whether or not the wisdom teeth are impacted as well as the geographical location of your Aspen Dental office. For specific pricing, contact your dentist.

Wisdom teeth removal FAQs

After wisdom teeth removal, it's crucial to stick to a soft and easily digestible diet to aid in the healing process. Opt for foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies, and soup. During your recovery, it’s best to avoid hot, spicy or crunchy items.

The recovery period for wisdom teeth extraction varies, but you can expect your mouth to begin healing within about a week. However, full recovery may take several weeks. While your smile is adjusting, it’s important to follow post-operative care instructions provided by your dentist for optimal recovery.

You’ll be able to resume normal activities shortly, but we recommend that you rest for at least 24 hours after the procedure. Most people prefer to take off work or school for a few days while they recover.

As with any oral surgery there are potential risks and complications. These may include dry socket (a painful condition that occurs if the post-surgery blood clot is lost too early), infection, nerve injury and sinus complications.

Many dental insurance plans cover wisdom teeth removal. However, coverage varies, so it's important to check with your insurance provider.

In some cases, if your wisdom teeth are not causing problems, they may not need to be removed. However, your dentist or oral surgeon will know what’s best for your smile.
If you're experiencing discomfort related to your wisdom teeth or have further questions about the extraction process, we invite you to schedule an appointment with us. Our team of dental professionals is ready to help guide you through the process and ensure the best possible outcome.

Oftentimes you can expect the procedure to remove wisdom teeth to be finished under an hour. With more complex extractions, it could possibly take longer.

Choosing to remove your wisdom teeth depends on several factors, including their alignment, potential for impaction as well as impact on oral health. While not everyone needs to have wisdom teeth removed, it is a common procedure and it’s important to consult with your dentist. They’ll assess your unique smile situation and determine if this treatment is best for you.
